Council to become Official Host of the Rocky River Run

Rockhampton Regional Council has become the host of yet another iconic community event after today agreeing to take over the annual Rocky River Run.
The decision was adopted at today’s ordinary meeting after Council received a request from CTC to manage the event into the future due to its increase in popularity.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said Council was proud to take on the Region’s most popular and vibrant fundraising event which attracts more than 3,000 thousand people per year.
“I commend CTC for their management of the event in the last three years and it is with great confidence that Council accepts their request to now take the Rocky River Run to new heights,” Mayor Strelow said.
“Council has continuously supported the Rocky River Run over the past ten years and watched it grow from strength to strength every year.
“Our Advance Rockhampton team has proven that they have an excellent track record of delivering some fantastic events to our Region, especially of this size, and I have no doubt the next River Run will be of no exception.”
The Rocky River Run was established by the Rockhampton Rotary Club in 2007, however, in 2015 the event became too large for the Club’s membership and CTC was asked to take oversight of the event.
In recent years, the event has incorporated more of the CBD into its running track, including the Riverside precinct along Quay Street and also East Street, which CTC General Manager Darryl Lapworth says has attracted more participants.
“We’ve seen CBD traders really embrace the improvements to the route with thousands of participants filling the CBD, eating at local cafes and visiting local shops – making it the busiest day of the year for some businesses,” Mr Lapworth said.
“The event has also been a roaring success for local hotels, boosting overnight visitor numbers from less than 100 to more than 600 visitors since 2015.
“We are proud of how far the CTC team have advanced the event in past three years and we can’t wait to see Council build upon this incredible foundation.”
All proceeds will continue to go towards youth mental health and suicide prevention.
